BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION TRAINING

Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) uses compression to limit blood flow out of the muscle (without complete restriction of blood flow into the muscle) in order to improve muscle hypertrophy and strength using loads less than 60% of 1 rep max. It alters the ratio of mechanical loading and metabolic stress to give similar outcomes as performing high intensity training, or training with higher mechanical loads, making it perfect for a rehabilitation or muscle recovery setting.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

By creating an occlusion, blood flow out of the muscle is limited, creating a greater metabolic stress. This elevates blood lactate levels which leads to increased growth hormone and IGF-1 (anabolic protein). Through BFRT, we are able to increase fast-twitch fiber recruitment, cell swelling, and protein synthesis, leading to muscle hypertrophy, faster recovery, strength gains, and improved VO2 max.

WHEN TO USE BFRT

Most recent research has looked into the use of BFRT for specific situations, including: lower limb strengthening, power and total workload in the rehabilitation of osteoarthritic knee pain, post-op ACL reconstruction, osteochondral fractures and other lower limb pathologies which may limit heavy lifting (>60% 1RM). AKA - if you have had surgery or a serious injury that limits you from doing your regular exercise - you may benefit!

However, it has been found to be beneficial in improving general fitness, specific strength and hypertrophy gains post-op and acute injury and no injury, and speeding the muscle recovery process.

WHAT MUSCLE UP IS OFFERING

Because this is a good tool if used repeatedly (1x per day, up to 2x per day), I want to ensure you have the knowledge and tools to achieve the best benefits.

You will set up a training session with me (45 to 60 minutes in length) - we will discuss what your goals are to fit you with the right cuff set. I will educate you on the use of the cuffs and run you through a supervised exercise program with them. You will be able to leave with the cuffs in hand as well as 2 exercise programs to do with them.

The cost is $75 for the training session plus $50 for the month rental.

If you sign them out for 1 month, you must return them to me within 7 days of the last day of that month. For every day after that they are not returned to me, a $5 per day late fee will be added.

If you would like to keep them for an additional month, please let me know a week in advance before the end of the month so I can plan on keeping them signed out. Each additional (planned) month is $20.

Contraindications to Blood Flow Restriction Training (DON'T use it if):

  • Venous thromboembolism
  • Impaired circulation or peripheral vascular compromise
  • Previous revascularization of the extremity
  • Extremities with dialysis access
  • Acidosis
  • Extremity infection
  • Tumor distal to the tourniquet
  • Medications and supplements known to increase clotting risk
  • Open fracture
  • Increased intracranial pressure
  • Open soft tissue injuries
  • Post-traumatic lengthy hand reconstructions
  • Severe crushing injuries
  • Severe hypertension
  • Elbow surgery (where there is concomitant excess swelling)
  • Skin grafts in which all bleeding points must be readily distinguished
